Papers, 1852-1858.

The earlier volume covers most of the three years he spent abroad, beginning with preparations in November 1852 and ending in July 1856. There are several paginations with detailed listings of expenses by household, furniture, books, and travel. There is also a political diary, and inverted and reversed, an account of his travels. The narrative section discusses his feelings toward the governments of England and France, who "hate us and express contempt and conceal also their fear of America as a rival and a political model they fear their people may copy." He left Europe disappointed, but unable to financially support a residence in Paris to continue his efforts against the slave trade. The later volume is primarily a journal of his expenses as he travelled in the East and South, particularly New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Savannah, Tallahassee, and throughout Virginia and West Virginia between 12 July 1856 and 8 April 1858. It has 107 pages. From the back, inverted and reversed, is a 7-page memorandum of letters and addresses.
